Claude (Anthropic)
Stage 1 — Get startedBest for nuanced writing, long-context analysis, and compliance-sensitive drafts where voice matters.
Best for
- Drafting client communications that require warmth + regulatory awareness
- Long-document summarization (10-K filings, prospectuses, court rulings — Opus handles up to 1M tokens)
- Multi-step analytical reasoning where you want the model to show its work
- Code-review and Excel formula explanation where precision matters more than speed
- Advisor workflows via Claude for Financial Advisors (announced Sept 14, 2026; Enterprise plans only, 20-seat minimum) — Anthropic's suite of connectors and skills for meeting prep, portfolio analysis and drafting follow-ups for advisor review, with 11 connectors as of Oct 2026, including Schwab Advisor Services (the first RIA custodian included), BlackRock, Addepar, iCapital, Orion, Envestnet, Wealthbox, Zocks and Vanguard.
Avoid
- Real-time data — Claude is knowledge-cutoff bound. Use Perplexity for current news.
- Image generation — Claude doesn't generate images. Use ChatGPT's built-in image generation or Gemini.
- Bulk operations where you'd benefit from API automation — Claude's API is fine but ChatGPT's ecosystem is broader.
Shortcuts
- Use Projects (now on every plan; Free is capped at 5) to load firm-specific context once — disclaimers, compliance rules, voice samples — and reference it across many chats.
- Use Artifacts for any document you'll iterate on (emails, summaries, code) — they render cleanly and accept revision requests in-line.
- Custom Styles let you save your firm's voice so every output sounds consistent across the team.
- For research analysis, paste the document first and ask the question second — Claude attends better to recent context.
Model variants
Anthropic updates its lineup often. As of Oct 2026 its current models are: Claude Fable 5.1 (Anthropic's pick for the most demanding reasoning and long-horizon work), Opus 5.5 (Anthropic's recommended starting point for most workloads; 1M-token context), Sonnet 5.5 (speed plus intelligence), and Haiku 5.5 (fastest). Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 are now legacy models. Which models you can pick depends on your plan — the Free plan does not include Opus.
Compliance gotchas
- Never paste client PII (account numbers, SSNs, balances) into Claude.ai's free tier. Anthropic states Free-plan chats are used for model training only if you opt in, but the Free plan has none of the commercial terms or admin controls a firm needs.
- Use Claude Team or Enterprise (from $20/user/mo billed annually) for firm data — commercial terms with no model training on your content by default, plus central admin and SSO. Note that Anthropic states the Team and Enterprise chat interfaces are not zero-data-retention eligible; set your retention policy deliberately.
- Output from Claude is unaudited — your firm's compliance review process still applies before client-facing communications go out.
- Be specific about disclaimers in your prompt — Claude will helpfully invent generic ones if you don't tell it your firm's required language.
- Claude for Financial Advisors keeps the advisor in control — Anthropic states investment recommendations, client communications and compliance determinations remain subject to human review and approval, and it is offered on Enterprise plans only (20-seat minimum), whose audit logs support recordkeeping. Connected custodial data (e.g. Schwab Advisor Center) is client data: confirm your firm has approved the connector before enabling it.
